AN ODE, For the FOURTH of JULY

Listen in the reader

AMERICA's birth day bids Freemen arise, And sound in loud triumph her fame to the skies; Independence! thy standard to Liberty's shore Shall ever be welcome 'till time is no more.

May festive oblations forever adorn The Fourth of July, the bright star of our morn; And may each Annivers'ry illumine the mind, And knowledge diffuse thro' the mass of mankind.

May the Ruler of nations bid discord to cease In our Cougress and Senate, and bless us with Peace; And may infinite wisdom inspire them to plan Such laws as insure the Divine Rights of Man!

May the despots of Europe, with armies combin'd Against sacred Freedom, defeats ever find; May discord in council their diets confound, And their subjects awake at fair Liberty's found.

May wisdom direct the Convention of France, Pure Liberty's cause and Man's Rights' to advance; May her armies, still firm and united as one, Complet in full conquest the task they've begun.

May virtue secure us from evils to come, From tyrants abroad, and from despots at home; May the foes of Columbia be crush'd in the dust, 'Till haughty Great-Britain shall learn to be just!
