PATRIOTISM, An ODE, in honor of those who distinguished themselves in the late WAR

Ye patriots, listen to my strain, Nor thou, philosophy, disdain A theme, which every mind must raise; Which angels might deseend to praise, Methinks I hear the song again, Glory to God, and Peace to Men.

What merit shall I first record, The patriots' eloquence or sword? Great Washington, in valor's field, Compell'd our haughty foes to yield. Franklin, in France, who mildly shone, Prov'd both Minervas are our own.

Of those who oft their courage tried, Who nobly liv'd, or nobly died. Good Washington we own supreme, The soldier's pride, the patriot's theme. He knew in battle to excel; The arts of peace he knows as well.

How many deathless praise have won! Bold Adams—gentler Dickinson— Hancock's determin'd soul, combin'd With Jefferson's enlighten'd mind. Our breasts with worth were taught to glow, And honor'd foreign Rochambeau.

O France! thy virtues we confess; May Heaven reward thee with success! Thy struggles let the world revere; Fayette is thine—and canst thou fear! France taught our haughty foes to bow; In freedom we instruct her now.

Still let us ev'ry tribute give To those who died, or those who live; To those who felt the battle's rage, Or now in peaceful arts engage. To Gates immortal praise be given, Whilst Warren's spirits rest in Heaven; Ye soldiers who in battle glow'd! Ye artists, who true genius shew'd! Ye statesmen, firm at once and just, Whether ye live or rest in dust, The muse shall crown you with applause: Great were your deeds, and just your cause.

I sing (attend me, age and youth!) The strains of glory and of truth. See! a new government appears, Doubts to dispel, and banish fears: And see! (whilst rapture warms each breast) The star of empire in the West!
