English poem
SONG, Written on the taking of ST. JOHN's
by Anonymous
Hark! hark! the joyful News is come, Sound, sound the trumpet, beat the drum, Let manly joy abound, Where freedom's sacred ensigns wave, Supported by the free and brave, There vict'ry is found.
From east from west, from south from north, America's brave sons come forth, All terrible in arms. Their right and freedom to maintain; They dauntless tread the bloody plain, And laugh at war's alarms.
Kind Providence, our troops inspire With more than Greek or Roman fire, Our cause, therefore, prevails. Favour'd by Heav'n, a free-born few, Tyrannic legions shall subdue, For justice seldom fails.
Let joyful temp'rate bowls pass round, And songs to their just praise resound, Who have their valour shewn. To Putnam, and to Montgomery, To Wooster, Gates, to Wayne, to Lee, And glorious WASHINGTON.
