The Wife's Consolation to her Husband under Affliction

No more, lov'd partner of my soul, At disappointment grieve, Can flowing tears our fate controul, Or sighs our woes relieve? Adversity is virtue's school, To those who right discern; Let us observe each painful rule, And each hard lesson learn. When wintry clouds obscure the sky, And Heav'n and earth deform, If fix'd the strong foundations lie, The castle braves the storm. Thus, fix'd on faith's unfailing rock, Let us endure awhile Misfortune's rude impetuous shock, And glory in our toil. Ill fortune cannot always last; Or, tho' it should remain, Yet we each painful moment haste, A better world to gain— Where calumny no more shall wound, Nor faithless friends destroy; Where innocence and truth are crown'd With never-fading joy.
