English poem
Verses writ upon a GLASS
by Anonymous
'Tis generous Wine refines our Clay, And makes our Souls out-shine the Day; 'Tis BACCHUS guards our Health and Truth, Inspires our Wit, preserves our Youth; Enobles Friendship, downs Deceit, And smooths the rugged Brow of Fate. The only Cure of gloomy Spleen, The Show'r that makes our Sky serene, Then since the GOD has crown'd our Cup, 'Twere Folly not to drink it up.
