Inscription for a Reed-house
by Edward Jerningham (1737–1812)
Say, if to shun the noisy day, The summer sun's oppressive ray, Thou visit'st Contemplation's cell, Here tarry—she'll repay thee well: For she can bid each passion cease And soothe the troubled heart to peace, Can to thy sober wishes yield Contentment's flow'r and Wisdom's shield.
