Summing Up
by Lemuel Hopkins (1750–1801)
O Washington how stands thy dauntless breast! Do scenes like these disturb thy nightly rest? Tho' Charleston mob, like lice in Egypt, swarms, Tho' Rutledge rages, and tho' Pinckney storms, Tho' Bache and Mason join to print, and sell, Tho' Hydrop Blair "the Treaty kick to hell, Tho' thieves and Livingstons with patriot ire, Commit the accursed paper to the fire, Tho' JARVIS thundering from his murky cloud, Sheds night and terror o'er the astonish'd crowd, Yet, shall thy heart, so often us'd to share Dangers and toils too great for man to bear, Shrink back appall'd, its firmness all resign, When pigmies bluster, and when knaves combine? ILLUSTRIOUS MAN! thy indignation shew, And plunge them headlong where they ought to go. Then turn thine eye, this mighty realm survey— See Federal Virtue bless thy glorious sway, See infant States, beneath thy plastic hand, Stretch in vast numbers o'er the boundless land, The desart blossom, towns, and cities rise, And Peace, and Freedom hail their kindred skies, While all earth's empires, states, and kings, behold Millennial scenes of happiness unfold.
