English poem
The Golden Bessie
by Stephen Vincent Benet (1898–1943)
Oh, the captain he's fine in his gay scarlet coat. Bold sailors seem kings on the seas where they float. And lawyers and merchants are gallant and free. But gold masters all men, my golden Bessee!
“The Viners for duty, the Custyns for beauty, The Reeves to law with the crown. And the griping Barrows to hoard their gold Till the world turns upside down.”
