English poem
THE SHRUBS OF PARNASSUS, &c, SONG
by Anonymous
Ye gods! how happy once was I? No mortal e'er so blest, 'Till cruel JENNY caught my heart, And rob'd me of my rest.
A form so lovely and divine, I could not but admire; But ah! the sweet, the cruel she Has set my soul on fire.
Come then, thou soft endearing fair, And hear thy slave complain; Unlock his mind, subdue his care, And take away the chain.
