English poem
The little Success which attended the personal Ministry of CHRIST. Isaiah xlix. 4
by Philip Doddridge (1773–1832)
And doth the Son of GOD complain, "Lo, I have spent my Strength in vain, And stretch'd my Hands whole Days and Years To those, who slight my Words and Tears".
O stubborn Hearts, that could withstand Such Efforts from a Saviour's Hand! O gracious Saviour, who would bleed, When Words and Tears could not succeed!
Fall down, my Soul, in humble Woe, That thou hast wrong'd his Goodness so: Now let his Grace resistless move To melt the stubborn Flint to Love.
All-glorious LORD, march forth and reign, And reap the Fruit of all thy Pain; And, till a nobler Scene appear, Begin the happy Conquest here.
