A Soliloquy

When I forsook thy Law and Precepts did Decline, Turning aside from Paths of Life to crooked ways of mine. My Face was from the Light a mist before my Eyes, The way was Dark and Slippery, I fell, but could not rise; Till GOD from Heaven sent, because it was his Will, Concerning me, my Sinful Soul to Save and not to spill; The Night came on apace, no Light Remain'd in View, But Depth of Darkness me enclos'd more Dense than Egypt knew. Enonious Conscience then Commanded to fulfil What GOD forbad, and to refuse Obedience to his Will. His Gospel Precepts I as Mens Inventions slighted, Nor with his Holy Worship was my Soul at all Delighted. His Sabbath I Profan'd, and thought I kept His Law Better than those who of the Fourth Commandment stood in awe. The Daily Sacrifice I wholly did Restrain; And what so ere was Wrong seem'd Right, whilst Darkness did remain. For Lo, his Precepts Light ceas'd on my Soul to shine, And Blackest Smokes of Hells dark Fire, I took for Rays Divine. His Sanctuary where His Glory oft is seen, And where His Blessing from on high has oft Commanded been; Ev'n Life for ever more, as all his Children know, I did forsake, and took my Choice with Scornful Men to go, To Satans Synagogue, where Sons of error met, Who being Blind, were lead by one more Blind into the Net. His Saints I treated ill, His Prophets I Despighted, Their Suasive Arguments and Prayers, as trivial things I slighted. The Civil Magistrate who bore the Sword of GOD, I did Contemn and so Declin'd to Fear Christs Sovereign Rod. But thus to be and do, did not to me Suffice, There yet remain'd one step to fall before my Soul could rise. That Sacramental Bond by which my Soul was ty'd To Christ in Biptism, I cast off and basel, Vilifi'd. I suffer'd to be wash'd (as Satan Instituted) My Body, so my Soul thereby became the more Polluted. This was my lowest fall the utmost step whereby My Feet were able to digress from Paths of Verity. O GOD my Sin release in all that I have done, And mark not the Indignities I've offered to thy SON.
